How do I grow on Instagram? A Business Owner's Guide…

If you constantly ask yourself, “How do I actually grow on Instagram?”… You’re definitely not alone.

It’s one of the most common questions I get from business owners, because Instagram can often feel confusing and completely overwhelming.

One minute you think you’ve cracked it…Next, Instagram has launched a brand new feature that you’re scared of, your reach has dropped, engagement‘s down, and you’re back to wondering what you should be posting all over again 😩.

In this blog, I’m going to walk you through what actually helps you grow on Instagram, without overcomplicating it or telling you to post 24/7.

Growth isn’t random

A lot of people think Instagram growth is about:

  • Going viral

  • Posting more

  • Jumping on every trend that comes along

But really, growth comes from something much simpler than this:

Clarity + consistency + a solid strategy

When those three things come together, growth becomes much more predictable (and much less stressful). So how do you do it? Read on…

1. You need to get clear on who you’re talking to

That age-old saying rings true…If you speak to everyone, you speak to no one.

So, one of the most important first steps is getting really clear on:

  • Who is your ideal client

  • What they’re struggling with - their pain points 😩, what keeps them up at night?

  • What they actually want & need help with

Because when your content speaks directly to your ideal audience, people naturally follow, engage and stick around for more. They’re naturally invested.

2. Knowing what to post (and why)

This is the bit that people find tricky. You sit down to post and think: “What am I saying today?”

Instead of guessing, you want to create strategic content that falls into a few key categories (or pillars), like:

  • Helpful/educational - Highlight your expert knowledge and share useful tips

  • Trust-building/authority - Case studies of past work and results

  • Promotional - Share details of your services and products, newsletters

  • Relatable/personal - Show your face and behind the scenes of your business

This gives your content purpose - you’re no longer posting randomly and praying 🙏.

3. Use Reels to reach new people

Reels are still one of the best ways to get in front of people who don’t follow you yet. The word ‘Reels’ frightens a lot of people, so I always say Reels are just videos. That’s it 🙌. When you think of them as simply videos, much of the worry disappears.

And the really good news is, Reels don’t need to be complicated to be successful. In fact, the simpler, the better.

What works best now is:

  • Short, punchy Reels - viewers have short attention spans

  • Super clear messaging - on screen-text & captions help to get these across

  • Simple ideas - one call-to-action per Reel

  • Strong hooks in the first few seconds - stop the scroll

Give clear value, concisely and quickly.

4. Collaborate

One of the fastest ways to grow on Instagram right now is through collaboration.

When you collaborate with another account that has a similar audience:

  • Your content gets seen by more people who are aligned with your business

  • You build trust faster

  • You grow your audience without the need for paid ads

  • In fact, collaboration posts can generate significantly more reach than standard posts — because you’re tapping into two audiences at once.

It’s such an underrated strategy, and one I always recommend.

5. Be consistent (but realistic)

Consistency doesn’t mean posting every day.

It means:

  • Showing up regularly

  • Sticking to a simple plan

  • Not disappearing for weeks at a time - Instagram has confirmed that being absent from Instagram for a month + can hurt your reach (because the algorithm has less data about your account and activity)

Even something like:

  • 1 Reel

  • 1 post

  • A few Stories

Each week is enough — IF you stay consistent.

6. Pay attention to what’s working

You don’t need to obsess over numbers — but you do want to notice patterns.

Check in with:

  • What posts get saved or shared?

  • What content gets the most replies?

  • Which posts result in sales and email list sign-ups?

  • What feels easiest for you to create?

Then do more of that.

Growth becomes much easier when you stop reinventing the wheel.

So… how do you actually grow?

When you bring all of this together, growth starts to feel much simpler.

You’re no longer guessing and overthinking each post 🙌.

You’re just showing up with:

  • Clear messaging

  • A simple plan

  • Content that actually connects

Need help putting this into practice?

Key Takeaways…

Growing on Instagram really doesn’t have to feel complicated. In fact, that’s what we want to actively avoid.

  • You don’t need to be perfect

  • You don’t need to go viral

  • And you definitely don’t need to do everything

You just need a super simple strategy that you can stick to.

Once you have that, everything starts to feel a lot easier…we promise!

Here are a few FAQs I get asked all the time:

How long does it take to grow on Instagram?
Growth for each account is not a one-size-fits-all, and will be different for each account and niche. It depends on consistency and strategy, but most people start seeing improvements within a few weeks of posting consistently.

Do I need to post every day to grow?
No, nope, absolutely not. Quality over quantity every single time. Consistency will always matter more than frequency. A few quality posts each week is enough and so much better than posting loads one month and then nothing the next.
